Tochmarc Emire ( "The Wooing of Emer") is one of the stories of the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology and is one of the longest when he got his way in the second recension (below). These are the efforts of the hero Cúchulainn to marry Emer, who appears as his wife, in other stories of the cycle, and his weapons training in the warrior-woman Scathach. The tochmarc ( "the court" or "dating") (together with the cattle raids, trips, parties, births and deaths) is one of the "genres" of Irish literature recognized the body of the manuscript.
ABSTRACT
In his youth, Cuchulainn was so beautiful that the men of Ulster feared that without a woman himself, he came to steal their wives and ruin their daughters. They look across Ireland a suitable wife for him, but he will not have any, unless Emer, the daughter of Forgall Monach. However, Forgall opposed to his departure. He suggests that Cúchulainn to train arms with the renowned warrior woman Scathach in the land of Alba (Scotland), hoping that evidence will be too much for him and that he is killed. Cúchulainn accepts the challenge. However, Emer Forgall offers for Lugaid mac Nóis, a king of Munster, but when he hears that Emer loves Cúchulainn, Lugaid refuse his hand. Scathach Cú Chulainn teaches all the arts of war, including the use of Bulg Gáe, launches with a terrible fence, which launched, cut the feet of his victim. Among his co-training is included Ferdiad, who becomes the best friend of Cuchulainn that promotes brother. During his time there, Scathach faces a battle against Aife, his rival and, in some versions of her twin sister. Scathach, knowing the exploits of Aife, fears for the life of Cuchulainn and gives him a powerful sleeping potion to keep him out of battle. However, due to the great strength of Cuchulainn, it just puts you to sleep for an hour, and he soon joins the battle. He fights Aife in single combat, and the two are balanced, but the Cúchulainn distracted, she falls off a cliff and calling the horses and chariots of Aife, the things she valued most in the world. He spares his life on condition that it regardless of their enmity with Scathach, take with him a son. Leaving Aife pregnant Cúchulainn returns from Scotland fully trained, but Forgall still refuses to let him marry Emer. Cúchulainn as a storm invaded the fortress of Forgall, killing twenty-four men of Forgall abducts Emer and steals the treasures of Forgall. Forgall falls from the walls and die. Conchobar has the right "first night" over all marriages of his subjects. He is afraid of the reaction of Cuchulainn if he has, in this case, but is equally afraid of losing his authority if he did not. Cathbad suggests a solution: Conchobar sleeps with Emer on the night of the wedding, but Cathbad sleeps between them.
